In the year 981 Pellegrino was granted by Emperor Otto II with a marquisate to Albert of Baden, progenitor of the Pallavicino who began the construction of the castle: a mighty fortress that from the top of a hill overlooking the village. In 1198 the castle was rebuilt by Guglielmo Pallavicini and from this moment the history of the village is linked to that of the manor.
The castle is linked to the ghost called "The Fairy of Pellegrino", who for a long time turned exclusively to the castle. It is starting in 1827 that the phenomenon becomes mass. The chronicles relate that the peregrine population gathered outside the castle to see the ghost that appeared to many people all white, laid under the cloak that covers it all: the shoulders, neck and head.
The parish church of St. Joseph is located in the center of the village and was built between 1915 and 1927 in Romanesque style. Divided into three naves presents a stunning façade. Inside is a collection of works of art including "The Last Supper", a wooden sculpture of the contemporary artist Walter Benecchi, and contains several stones of an ancient church built in 1642.

The foundation of the Sanctuary dates from year 1230 and comes from a quote in Careno "Capitulum seu Rotulus Decimarum", one of the oldest documents of the Parma ecclesiastical history.
It has come to a constant devotional flow, particularly numerous during Jubilees, whose attendance records since at least 1500 are still preserved.
In particular, in the Sanctuary, today dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of the Assumption and stated that in 1902 by the Bishop of Parma, is venerated the image of Our Lady of Fools and pray to it the suffering of nerve diseases.
